Their compact design ensures you remain dry during unexpected downpours without the inconvenience of carrying heavy gear. While more expensive waterproof overtrousers are available, I found these gave the best balance of features and value for most three-season walks in the UK.

One key feature of these over trousers is the three-quarter-length water-resistant side zips. These allow for easy on-and-off access over your walking trousers, even when wearing boots, and also offer adjustable ventilation to help regulate body temperature during high-energy activities. Additionally, a storm flap protects the zips from water ingress, enhancing durability against challenging weather conditions. An elasticated waist further enhances comfort, ensuring a snug fit that accommodates additional layers of clothing when needed.

These trousers are an excellent choice for various outdoor activities, including hiking, camping, and trekking. Their lightweight, packable nature makes them ideal for those who need dependable waterproof protection without adding bulk to their kit. They are easily stowed in a rucksack and are perfect for coping with unpredictable weather conditions.

Pros:

  • Lightweight and packable
  • Waterproof
  • Easy to put on and take off
  • Adjustable ventilation

Cons:

  • Durability - Could be a little better, but more durable ones generally cost a lot more

Best women's waterproof trousers

Berghaus Women's Paclite Pant

No real surprise here, as these are the women's version of the Berghaus Men's Paclite Pant. These utilise the same GORE-TEX PACLITE® technology, so provide exceptional waterproofing while remaining lightweight and highly packable, weighing approximately 226 grams for a UK size 12, in a women's fit.

I've used these as part of the mandatory kit for mountain marathons and found them to be super-soft and stretchy, which allowed for unrestricted running movement. The knee-high zips facilitate easy on and off, even over fell shoes, which is particularly beneficial during sudden weather changes. Additionally, the pants can be conveniently packed into an integrated stash pocket, making them easy to carry and slip into a side pocket in my backpack when not in use.

Pros:

  • Waterproof
  • Very lightweight and packable
  • Unrestricted movement
  • Easy on and off
  • Breathable
  • Available in men's and women's versions

Cons:

  • Limited waist adjustment - no drawcord

The men's version weighs approximately 310 grams, while the women's version is even lighter, at around 265 grams. The men's pants are available in sizes small through XXL, and the women's version is offered in sizes XS through XL and is available in black, navy, and slate grey.

This version has full-length side zippers, which allow for quick on and off over walking trousers and boots - making them ideal for sudden weather changes. The elastic waistband, equipped with an adjustable drawcord, ensured a snug and comfortable fit, accommodating multiple layers. Having this flexibility in the waist is great if your weight can fluctuate up or down a few pounds, which mine often does!

For added practicality, the trousers include zippered hand pockets and a zippered back pocket, providing secure storage for small essentials. For the environmentally conscious, PFC-Free Durable Water Repellent is used for excellent water repellence which, along with 100% taped seams, keeps you dry.

Pros:

  • Waterproof
  • Lightweight and packable
  • Full-length side zippers
  • Adjustable fit
  • Eco-friendly design
  • Available in multiple sizes and colours for both men and women

Cons:

  • Durability - not as durable as some
  • Waterproof - not as waterproof as the more expensive ones that I tested, but do offer great value

Best budget waterproof trousers

Regatta Pack-It Waterproof Overtrousers

As I often do for the budget version, I looked to see which were high sellers on Amazon and had more than a 4-star review. To fit these criteria, I found these Regatta Pack-It Waterproof Overtrousers, which are around £15, a budget-friendly option for men and women needing some rain protection without breaking the bank.

Made from Isolite 5000 lightweight fabric, these trousers claim to be waterproof, windproof, and breathable, offering dependable protection during wet weather. Weighing approximately 150 grams, they are compact and easily packable, making them a convenient choice for hikers, commuters, and festival-goers.

These overtrousers feature an elasticated waistband for a comfortable fit and straight-leg openings for easy layering over regular clothing. They are available in a range of sizes: men's sizes span from S to XXL, while women's sizes range from 8 to 20, and are available in a few different colour options.

For me they perform well for everyday mainly summer use and occasional light adventures, or to have as an emergency pair in your car or backpack. If you are going on more serious walks and could be subject to long periods of heavy rain or walking over rough ground, I would choose one of the other pairs on this list that are more waterproof, more durable and practical. I can see they do have a place though and with over 18,000 reviews on Amazon averaging at 4.4 out of 5, many people would agree.

Pros:

  • Budget-friendly
  • Very lightweight and packable
  • Wide size range and available in men's and women's versions
  • Colour options
  • Men's, women's and kid's versions available

Cons:

  • Basic design: Straight-leg openings and limited adjustability may not suit all preferences
  • Durability concerns: Thin material may wear out quicker with heavy use or rough terrain
  • Waterproof and breathability: Limited breathability and waterproof rating make them unsuitable for prolonged wet walks

Best winter waterproof trousers

Mountain Equipment Makalu Trousers

The Mountain Equipment Makalu Pants are designed for year-round hiking and mountaineering, offering robust protection against the elements. They are crafted from durable 75D Gore-Tex® fabric and provide reliable waterproofing and breathability, ensuring comfort during prolonged use.

The Alpine fit, featuring articulated knees and a gusseted crotch, allows unrestricted movement on technical terrain. The reinforced sections on the knees and seat add additional protection whilst scrambling and climbing. To aid with the fit, there is an integrated elasticated waistband with a drawcord and an adjustable hem to cinch around mountain boots.

Practical features include ¾ length two-way side zips for easy layering over boots and adjustable hems to seal out moisture. Being two-way zips, you can also open them from the top for additional ventilation. They are heavier than the others at 360g, but for the more severe weather, for me, this provided a balance between weight, durability and comfort.

Pros:

  • Waterproof and breathable
  • Durable
  • Freedom of movement
  • Men's and women's versions available

Cons:

  • A little expensive, but they are suitable for all-year-round walking in the UK

For a pair of waterproof trousers that can be worn all year round in the UK these are hard to beat for the price. If money is no object, Mountain Equipment also make a pair of waterproof trousers that match my Lhotse jacket - the Mountain Equipment Lhotse Pant, but these are approximately twice the price of the Makalu.

Best sustainable waterproof trousers

Designed with practicality in mind, the Torrentshell 3L trousers feature ¾-length two-way side zips, allowing for easy on and off over boots and providing ventilation during high-intensity activities. The elasticated waistband with an internal drawcord ensures a secure and adjustable fit, while articulated knees enhance mobility on challenging terrains.

Two zippered handwarmer pockets with mesh pocket bags and storm flaps offer convenient storage for small essentials. Weighing approximately 335 grams for a size medium, these trousers whilst not the lightest, are still very packable, making them suitable for hiking, trekking, and other outdoor pursuits.

Pros:

  • Waterproof and breathable
  • 100% recycled material
  • Ease of use: ¾-length side zips
  • Comfortable fit
  • Reasonably lightweight and packable

Cons:

  • Limited colour options: Primarily available in black, which may not appeal to all users.
  • Potential sizing variability: Some users may find the fit differs from other brands, suggesting a need to consult sizing charts or try on before purchasing.

These are a great option if you are looking for some 'green' waterproof trousers made from 100% recycled materials.

Hydrostatic head (Waterproof rating)

Before explaining the key features to look for when choosing waterproof trousers, it is important to understand what hydrostatic head is.

Hydrostatic head is a key measure of how waterproof a fabric is, making it an important factor to consider when choosing waterproof trousers or waterproof jackets. It's measured in millimetres (mm) and indicates how much water pressure a material can withstand before it starts to leak. For example, a hydrostatic head rating of 10,000mm means the fabric can hold back a 10-metre column of water before water begins to penetrate.

In practical terms, the higher the hydrostatic head rating, the better the fabric is at keeping you dry, even in heavy rain or when under pressure, such as kneeling or sitting on wet surfaces. For everyday use, a hydrostatic head rating of 5,000mm to 10,000mm is typically sufficient for light to moderate rain.

However, for harsher conditions, such as prolonged downpours or mountain expeditions, trousers with a rating of 20,000mm or higher are recommended. While higher-rated trousers often come with a steeper price tag, they provide better protection and durability. Understanding hydrostatic head ratings can help you choose trousers that match your outdoor needs, ensuring you stay dry and comfortable in any weather.

Buying guide and key features to look for in waterproof trousers

Certain features significantly impact performance and comfort when selecting waterproof overtrousers. High waterproof ratings and breathability maintain comfort and dryness during wet weather hiking, while lightweight and packable designs enhance transport ease during hikes.

Breathable fabrics are crucial in warmer weather, allowing air to circulate and keep legs cool. A snug fit without excess fabric prevents chafing and enhances comfort during hikes.

Considering these key features, you can choose waterproof over trousers that meet your needs and ensure a comfortable outdoor experience.

Waterproofing rating

Waterproofing and breathability are critical for waterproof overtrousers' performance. Waterproof ratings (hydrostatic head) range from 5,000mm for light rain to over 20,000mm for extreme conditions. This rating indicates the level of water pressure the fabric can handle before leaking, providing reliable waterproof protection during your outdoor adventures.

Breathability

A breathable membrane, such as Gore-Tex or eVent, helps prevent condensation buildup inside the trousers, keeping you dry and comfortable. High-quality rain pants often feature a waterproof membrane to prevent moisture penetration.

Gore-Tex tag on waterproof walking trousers

Gore-Tex tag on waterproof walking trousers

This feature is essential for maintaining comfort during high-intensity activities like hiking or trail running.

Side zips

Waterproof trousers or rain pants usually come with three types of zips - either full-length zips, three-quarter-length zips, or less frequently shorter zips that come to just below the knee. The longer the zip, the easier it will be for you to put them on and take them off, without having to remove your boots.

Long side zip

Long side zip

Conversely, the longer the zip, there is more potential for water ingress, as the zip protection may degrade over time. For me, I either have full-length or three-quarter length zips. The zips need to be watertight, or you need to have storm flaps over them to keep the water out.

Durability

Durability is also key when selecting waterproof trousers, especially for outdoor enthusiasts tackling rugged terrains. Durable trousers are tested for tensile strength and tear resistance to ensure long-lasting performance. High-quality indicators include well-sewn and taped seams and ripstop fabric.

Taped seams inside waterproof trousers and alongside the zip

Choose trousers made from abrasion-resistant fabrics like nylon or polyester, which can withstand rough terrain and harsh weather conditions. Reinforced areas, such as the knees and seat, add extra durability.

Waist

The design of the waist in waterproof trousers affects comfort and functionality. Adjustable waists enhance comfort and ensure a better fit, allowing for layering underneath. Features like partially elasticated waistbands combined with secure integral belts offer a better fit than fully elasticated waistband options, making them ideal for extended wear on those wet days.

They can fall down a little while walking if there is no belt loop. While I'm not suggesting that you go the full Bobby Ball, a good pair of braces can help with this. Some do have places where you can attach braces, otherwise you risk rubbing against the material at the point where the braces attach.

Packable size

Packable size is essential for ease of transport during hikes. The best waterproof trousers can compress into compact dimensions, making them easy to carry in a backpack. If you have a pair that can quickly be taken on and off, it is no effort when the rain stops to pop them back in your rucksack.

I have a very light pair that I leave in my rucksack all year round. One tip here is to have a dedicated dry bag for them. When you take them off, they will most likely be wet unless you continue to wear them while they dry out. So, putting them in a dry bag allows the wet trousers to be put in your backpack without everything in the backpack getting wet from them.

Adjustable cuffs and hem

Adjustable cuffs and hems are key for preventing water from entering your trousers. They allow you to secure the trousers around your walking boots or hiking boots, ensuring a snug fit that keeps you dry even in the wettest conditions.

Multiple pockets

Multiple pockets are practical for storing essentials like your phone, wallet, and snacks. Look for waterproof trousers with zippered pockets to keep your belongings safe and dry. For me, there are upsides and downsides to this one. While having items handy is good, you could also use the waist pockets on your backpack if you are using one. They potentially create a weak point in the trousers, as unless fully proofed water ingress could occur.

Reflective strips

Reflective strips increase visibility in low-light conditions, making it safer to walk or hike in the dark. This feature is particularly useful for early morning or late evening adventures. For me, this comes low down on my list of priorities as I do little road walking in the dark.

Taped seams

Reinforced seams are essential for durability and waterproofing. Taped or welded seams prevent water from entering through the stitching, ensuring your trousers remain watertight.

Taped seam

Taped seam

Storm flaps

These are added to some zippers and openings to prevent water ingress, enhancing the trousers' ability to keep you dry. A storm flap is particularly important as it protects zippers and pockets from water ingress, and enhances durability against the elements in challenging weather conditions.

Insulation

Insulated waterproof trousers provide added warmth and comfort for cold and wet conditions. Look for trousers with an inner lining or synthetic insulation to keep you warm during winter hikes or mountaineering.

This is not a key one for me, as I prefer to add warmth if I need it, by adding layers under my waterproof trousers. I like to wear walking trousers or other base layers under my waterproof trousers and have them purely as an outside shell. Again, this one is down to personal preference.

Adjustable ventilation

Adjustable ventilation options, such as zippered vents, allow you to regulate your body temperature and prevent overheating. This feature is handy during high-exertion activities. For this, you need a two-way zip, so you can create zip openings to let air in. I mainly use this for areas where my waterproof jacket covers my trousers, or for when the rain stops and I continue to wear my waterproof trousers for a while, while they dry off.

When choosing between lightweight and durable options, consider the specific activity and expected weather conditions to find the best fit.

Ankles

Ankle adjustments are important for preventing water ingress and accommodating various footwear. Some waterproof trousers feature reinforced panels at the ankle to protect against wear from equipment like crampons. Adjustable ankle closures provide a tailored fit, enhancing comfort during hikes.

Ease of getting on and off

This is basically covered above, but it is key to be able to put on and take off waterproof trousers easily, especially in wet conditions. Features like side zippers or elasticated cuffs facilitate easy removal without taking off shoes.

Materials and construction of waterproof trousers

Waterproof overtrousers are made from various materials, each with its own unique benefits and characteristics. Understanding these materials and their construction can help you choose the right pair for your needs.

Waterproof fabrics

Technologies like Gore-Tex and eVent provide a waterproof and breathable barrier, ensuring you stay dry while allowing moisture to escape. These fabrics are known for their high performance in wet conditions.

Durable Water-Repellent (DWR) coatings

DWR coatings help to repel water and prevent the fabric from becoming waterlogged. This treatment ensures that water beads up and rolls off the surface, enhancing the trousers' waterproof capabilities.

Nylon and Polyester

These materials offer durability and resistance to abrasion. They are lightweight yet robust, making them ideal for outdoor activities.

Stretchy materials

Elastane or Spandex are incorporated into these materials, which provide flexibility and comfort, allowing for a full range of motion. This is particularly beneficial for activities that require dynamic movements.

Insulating materials

Some waterproof trousers include insulating materials like fleece or synthetic insulation for cold conditions, providing warmth and comfort.

When it comes to construction, waterproof trousers often feature:

Reinforced knees and seat

These areas are often subject to wear and tear, so reinforcement provides additional durability and resistance to abrasion.

Articulated knees

Designed for flexibility and comfort, articulated knees allow for a natural range of motion, making the trousers more comfortable while hiking and climbing. For me, where articulated knees really help is walking uphill, where you have a higher knee lift.

Articulated knees with additional protection on waterproof walking trousers

By understanding the materials and construction of waterproof overtrousers, you can make an informed decision when choosing the right pair for your needs. There is often a play-off between durability and breathability, although some of the more expensive trousers offer both quite well. Whether you prioritise breathability, durability, or flexibility, there's a pair of waterproof trousers out there that will meet your requirements and enhance your outdoor experience.

Lightweight vs. durable waterproof trousers

Choosing between lightweight and durable waterproof trousers depends on your needs and activities. Lightweight trousers, like Rab Phantom pants at 79g, are ideal for quick protection during mountain running. They are easier to carry and reduce the burden on long hikes, perfect for backpackers. However, they may not provide as much protection in severe weather and may wear out with frequent use.

For me, if I'm hiking, I do not mind carrying the extra 200g to take with me a durable pair of waterproof trousers. Where I do use the very lightweight trousers, are on very wet days while running or as part of my mandatory kit when I do mountain marathons.

Care and maintenance of waterproof trousers

Proper care is essential for maintaining the effectiveness of your waterproof trousers. Before washing, inspect the care label and prepare the trousers by shaking off dirt, fastening zips and Velcro, and checking for damage. Use a specialist detergent like Granger's Performance Wash or Nikwax Tech Wash to preserve the durable water-repellent (DWR) coating, either through machine or hand washing, followed by a thorough rinse. Drying methods depend on the care label: air-dry in a ventilated space or tumble dry on low heat to reactivate the waterproofing.

Reproofing ensures long-term water resistance and can be done after washing using wash-in treatments like Granger's Clothing Repel or spray-on products for targeted areas. For wash-in treatments, add the product to the washing machine and follow the care instructions.

For spray-on applications, mist the outer fabric evenly and use heat (if permitted) to activate the waterproof layer. For convenience, all-in-one solutions like Granger's Wash + Repel allow you to combine washing and reproofing.

Proper maintenance, such as reproofing every 3-4 washes or when water stops beading, extends the life of your trousers. To protect the waterproof membrane, avoid fabric softeners, high heat, or regular detergents.

Regular inspections for repairs, careful storage in a dry space, and occasional professional services for significant damage ensure your waterproof trousers remain ready for all outdoor adventures. If you are unsure how to do this, check out our detailed guide on how to wash and reproof your waterproof trousers.

How you store and carry can impact the waterproofness of your waterproof trousers. They should be stored in a cool, dry place, ideally folded. Avoid cramming them into tight spaces to maintain the fabric's integrity. When in your backpack, they can be rolled or stored in their stuff sack.

Benefits of waterproof trousers

The benefits of waterproof overtrousers reflect their features. Some of the key benefits of waterproof trousers include:

Reliable waterproof protection

They provide a barrier against rain, snow, and wind, keeping your legs dry and comfortable. Whether caught in a sudden downpour or trudging through snow, these trousers ensure you stay dry and focused on your adventure.

Breathability

Many waterproof overtrousers feature breathable membranes that allow moisture to escape, preventing the build-up of sweat and discomfort. This breathability is crucial for maintaining comfort during high-intensity activities.

Durability

Many waterproof overtrousers are durable and long-lasting investments designed to withstand harsh weather conditions and rough terrain. They are built to endure the rigours of outdoor activities, ensuring you get the most out of your gear.

Versatility

They can be worn in a variety of settings, from hiking and camping to working in wet conditions. Their adaptability makes them a valuable addition to any outdoor wardrobe.

Comfort

These trousers are designed to be comfortable and flexible, allowing for a full range of motion and ease of movement. Features like articulated knees and adjustable waists enhance comfort, making them suitable for prolonged wear.

Investing in a good pair of rain pants allows you to enjoy your outdoor activities without worrying about the weather, ensuring a more enjoyable and comfortable experience.

Comparing soft-shell and hard-shell rain pants

Understanding the differences between soft-shell and hard-shell options can help you make an informed choice when it comes to rain pants. Soft-shell rain pants typically offer water-resistant properties and are more breathable and flexible, making them suitable for less severe weather. They do not usually include taped seams, which reduces their effectiveness in heavy rain.

In contrast, hard-shell rain pants, which we have been reviewing here, feature a waterproof membrane and are designed for maximum weather protection. Due to their superior waterproofing, they are ideal for high-intensity activities in unstable weather. Hard shell pants are lightweight but in the main do not provide insulation, so layering is required for warmth in cold conditions.

We will review soft-shell rain pants and walking trousers separately.

Waterproof trousers - Tips

I generally take two dry bags and keep my waterproof trousers separate from my waterproof jacket for storing them back in my backpack or in the boot of my car. This is mainly because my waterproof trousers often get very muddy around the bottom, whereas I rarely get mud on my jacket, so I find keeping them separate makes sense.

I usually take a carrier bag with me. When I put my waterproof trousers on, my boots are generally already muddy. To prevent this mud being transferred to the inside of your waterproof trousers when you put them on, simply pop your foot and boot in the carrier bag, whilst you slide your boot into your trousers.

If your waterproof trousers are not the most durable, or you end up walking through very prickly heather, etc., then maybe pair your waterproof trousers with some gaiters for those sections, so that they can take the brunt of anything that you rub against.

Best waterproof trousers summary

Waterproof trousers are an essential item for outdoor enthusiasts. They provide reliable waterproof protection and comfort in wet and windy conditions. When buying waterproof trousers, consider the features mentioned above to ensure you get the right pair for your needs. Whether you're hiking, walking, or engaging in other outdoor activities, waterproof trousers will keep you dry and comfortable.

Remember to check the waterproof rating, breathability, and additional features such as insulation, adjustable ventilation, and reinforced seams. With the right pair of waterproof trousers, you'll be able to enjoy the outdoors with confidence and comfort.

Investing in high-quality waterproof trousers means you can tackle any weather condition without worry. From lightweight options for quick hikes to durable trousers for winter mountaineering, there's a perfect pair out there for every adventure. Stay dry, stay comfortable, and make the most of your outdoor experiences with the best waterproof trousers.

Happy, dry walking...
