Why packing waterproof trousers efficiently matters
- Space-saving: Walking outdoors often requires packing multiple essentials. Compactly packing your waterproof trousers helps leave room for
the rest of your hiking essentials.
- Quick access: Sudden weather changes mean you may need your waterproof trousers quickly, so they should be accessible and easy to locate.
- Protecting the material: Proper folding or rolling prevents creases or damage to waterproof membranes, ensuring they remain effective.
Storing them in a waterproof bag ensures that when put away wet, the bag keeps the rest of your kit dry.
Step-by-step guide: How to pack waterproof trousers
1. Clean and dry your trousers
Before packing, ensure your trousers are:
- Clean: Remove any dirt or debris, as this can degrade waterproof materials over time.
- Dry: Packing damp trousers can lead to mildew or odours. If you must pack them wet, keep them in a separate waterproof bag. Then, as soon as you can afterwards, take them out of the bag to dry.

2. Decide how you'll pack them
Your chosen method depends on your priorities - space-saving, quick access, or protection from other gear. I always have mine in my
backpack,
but if the weather looks like it'll stay dry for the walk, I pack towards the middle of the backpack, whereas if it seems likely there will be
rain, I pack at the top or put in the zipped hood on my rucksack.
Method 1: Folding for a flat pack
Folding works well if you pack trousers in a flat, organised bag or compartment.
- Lay flat: Spread the trousers on a flat surface, smoothing wrinkles.

- Fold in half lengthwise: Bring one leg over the other so the trousers are folded vertically. Smooth out any creases.

- Fold at the knees: Fold the trousers horizontally at the knees or slightly higher to create a compact rectangle.

- Optional final fold: Fold again horizontally, if needed, to fit your bag.

Best for:
- Backpacks with flat compartments.
- Packing alongside other clothing for efficient stacking.
Method 2: Rolling for minimal space
Rolling is ideal for saving space and reducing wrinkles. I use this method the most, and once folded, I store them in a waterproof bag.
- Lay flat: Start by laying the trousers flat and smoothing creases.

- Roll tightly: Roll the trousers downward tightly toward the ankle, starting at the waistband. Ensure the roll is firm and compact.
- Secure the roll: Use a strap or similar or the trousers' elastic waistband to keep the roll secure.

Best for:
- Tight spaces or packing into side pockets.
- Ultralight backpacking, where every inch counts.
Method 3: Use the built-in pack pocket (if available)
Some waterproof trousers have a built-in pocket or stuff sack designed for compact storage.
- Find the pack pocket: Locate the pocket or pouch built into the trousers.
- Stuff or fold: Depending on the design, either fold or stuff the trousers into the pocket.
- Zip or secure: Close the pocket to keep them compact.
Best for:
- Trousers designed for portability.
- Easy and quick packing without worrying about folding or rolling.
3. Store in a waterproof bag
Even though waterproof trousers are designed to handle moisture, storing them in a lightweight,
waterproof bag
is a good idea. This keeps them:
- Separated from other gear: Avoids contamination from wet or dirty items.
- Easy access: You can grab the entire bag without rummaging through your pack.
- Protected from damage: Keeps sharp objects in your bag from puncturing the trousers.

I generally use a compression drysack sack for even more space-saving.
4. Position them strategically in your backpack
- For quick access: Pack your waterproof trousers near the top or in an external pocket so you can reach them without unpacking your entire bag.
- For long trips: If you don't expect immediate rain, place them in a mid-layer of your backpack so that other items you need first can be stored on top.
Additional tips for packing waterproof trousers
- Practice before you pack: Try folding or rolling at home to find the best technique for your gear and bag.
- Combine with other waterproof gear: Store trousers alongside your waterproof jacket for a complete rain gear kit. I generally take two dry bags and keep my waterproof trousers separate from my waterproof jacket. This is mainly because my waterproof trousers often get very muddy around the bottom, whereas I rarely get mud on my jacket, so I find keeping them separate makes sense.
- Pack lightweight trousers: Opt for packable designs that compress easily for smaller backpacks. Many good
waterproof trousers are available that are light and easy to walk in.
- Check for creases after unpacking: If your trousers have been stored for a while, check for creases that could affect their waterproof membranes. Our
How to maintain waterproof trousers guide explains how to store them.
Packing waterproof trousers - a summary
Packing waterproof trousers doesn't have to be complicated. Whether you fold, roll, or use a built-in pack pocket, the key is to keep them
compact, accessible, and protected. With some preparation and practice, you'll save space in your backpack and ensure you're ready for whatever
weather comes your way.
Happy walking!
